Anderlecht have secured the signing of Ireland international Andrew Omobamidele on loan. The 24-year-old centre-back joins from French Ligue 1 side Strasbourg for the remainder of the season.
The Brussels club currently sits 11th in the Jupiler Pro League with three points from three games. With a goal difference of -3 and trailing leaders Charleroi by nine points, defensive reinforcements are a priority. Omobamidele's arrival is a direct response to this situation and the absence of the injured Lucas Hey, who is listed on our injuries page.
Andrew Omobamidele is a centre-back from Leixlip who has already earned ten senior caps for the Republic of Ireland. He came through the youth ranks at Norwich City and also played for Nottingham Forest. Last season, he made 54 appearances for Strasbourg and even captained the side in a 2-1 win over Lens last Saturday. His experience at a high level in England and France makes him a valuable addition to Anderlecht's backline.
The Irishman's signing gives coach Brian Riemer more options at the back. Anderlecht have already conceded five goals in three league matches this campaign. Omobamidele will compete for a place in the heart of the defence, bringing physicality and pace. His presence is particularly important given the busy schedule, as Anderlecht will also compete in the Europa League. The club qualified by defeating Kazakhstan's FC Kairat 6-0 on aggregate in the play-offs.
The season-long loan deal allows Anderlecht to shore up their defence without a major financial outlay. The club finished fourth last season, but the 24-point gap to champions Club Brugge was significant. The immediate focus is on the next match, a home game against Genk on September 6th. Genk currently sit seventh, making it an important test. The latest league standings are always available on our standings page.
Omobamidele is expected to be integrated into the squad quickly. His first potential opportunity to feature for his new club comes in the upcoming league match against Genk at the Lotto Park.
