Thelo Aasgaard has completed a loan move to RSC Anderlecht. The 24-year-old Norwegian midfielder joins from Scottish giants Rangers.
The deal includes an option for Anderlecht to make the transfer permanent next summer for a fee of £5 million. Aasgaard arrives with Anderlecht sitting 11th in the Jupiler Pro League, having taken three points from three matches with a goal difference of minus three.
Thelo Aasgaard brings Scottish Premiership experience to Lotto Park. He has scored one goal in five appearances for Rangers this season. His contract with the Scottish club ran until 2029, making the loan arrangement attractive for all parties. Coach Brian Riemer gains an additional option in midfield, an area where reinforcement is welcome given the current league position.
The club currently trails league leaders Charleroi by nine points, a gap they will aim to close in the coming weeks. Aasgaard could potentially make his debut in the next home fixture against 7th-placed KRC Genk on September 6th. Fans can view the full schedule on our fixtures page.
The Aasgaard transfer was not the only business involving Rangers this week. The Scottish club turned down a loan bid from Turkish side Besiktas for their Belgian international Nicolas Raskin. Raskin, 25, returned to the Rangers midfield in a win at Falkirk on Wednesday and even took the captain's armband in the closing stages.
Rangers manager Derek McInnes was relieved to have the player available again. "I'm just glad I'm able to choose him tonight. We can do with his experience in there." McInnes told reporters. Raskin had missed his club's previous two matches amid transfer speculation.
The transfer window closes on Thursday at 17:00 BST. McInnes indicated he will be relieved when it shuts. "It seems to have been the longest window I can remember - so much going on." the manager stated.
His words highlight the disruption a transfer window brings, not only in Scotland but for clubs like Anderlecht too. The purple-and-white squad is currently without Lucas Hey, which can be tracked on our injuries overview.
The Norwegian's arrival offers Riemer more flexibility and depth in midfield. Anderlecht have scored two goals and conceded five so far this season. Added creativity and goal threat from the midfield could help improve this balance. Aasgaard will compete with the existing midfielders for a starting spot.
