Anderlecht have made a disappointing start to the season, collecting just seven points from their first five Jupiler Pro League matches. Former Belgian international Philippe Albert claims the club deserve more than this return.
Albert, analysing RSC Anderlecht's performances, pointed to a lack of effectiveness. "Anderlecht could have, and should have won," he said. "They were beaten in Beveren by a goalkeeper in top form, and Brughmans was also in top form yesterday." The club currently sits 11th in the league with seven points from five games, eight points behind leaders Gent.
The numbers are clear. Anderlecht have scored only three times in five league matches while conceding five goals, resulting in a negative goal difference of minus two. The attack has been struggling, despite the possession advantages often created by Bruno Vitor's side. The opposition has been tough at times, like against a well-organised KRC Genk, but the necessary sharpness in front of goal has been missing.
The immediate future offers a chance for recovery. On Saturday, Anderlecht travel to face KV Mechelen, who are in 15th place. The last meeting, on 15 March 2026, ended in a 1-0 defeat for Anderlecht. After that comes the start of their Europa League campaign, with a home match against Olympique Lyon at the Lotto Park.
The coming weeks are packed. After the match in Mechelen, European football awaits. The pressure on coach Vitor and his squad is increasing to turn results around. The full schedule for this busy period can be found on our fixtures overview. The team must quickly find the right balance between the league and Europe, needing to improve on a recent form sequence of draw, win, loss, loss, win (DWLLW).
Anderlecht play their next league match away to KV Mechelen on Saturday, 11 September 2026.
