RSC Anderlecht suffered another setback with a defeat to Union in the Jupiler Pro League. The purple-and-whites were beaten on the fourth matchday by a side that Sporza Voetbal analyst Peter Vandenbempt called 'downright impressive', while Anderlecht themselves were 'weak across the board'.

This loss compounds a difficult start to the season for the Brussels club. With just three wins from nine league matches, Anderlecht is experiencing its worst league start in seven years. The current standings as of 31 August 2026 are bleak: the club sits eleventh in the Jupiler Pro League with three points from three games, a record of one win, zero draws, and two losses. Recent form is LLW and the goal difference stands at 2-5.

The analysis from Peter Vandenbempt, the house analyst for Sporza Voetbal, was merciless. He described Anderlecht's play as "too slow, a bit lifeless". Manager Vitor Bruno and technical director Sibierski are watching their team struggle with tempo and intensity. Key players like Ambros, Nga Kana, Sikan, Cvetkovic, Biancone, and Pétrot failed to reach their usual levels. Only goalkeeper Coosemans prevented a heavier defeat with some decisive saves.

Union, in contrast, appeared strong and organised. After a draw with Zulte Waregem and three other official matches this season, players like Guilherme, Zeneli, Biondic, and Van de Perre were the driving forces. Their collective performance starkly contrasted with Anderlecht's lethargic display. The full league table can be followed on our standings page.

The numbers tell the story. Anderlecht has a negative goal difference of -3 and trails leaders Charleroi by a significant nine points. This is a considerable gap that makes a title challenge a huge undertaking early in the season. The absence of injured players Ilay Camara and Lucas Hey, does not help the squad depth.

The next chance for recovery is imminent. Anderlecht plays at home against Kortrijk, currently eighteenth in the table, on 3 September 2026. This is a must-win match to get the season back on track. The schedule for upcoming matches can be found in our fixtures overview.

Disappointment was not unique to Anderlecht. KAA Gent manager Leko issued fierce criticism of his own team after a victory he was unhappy with. He said there was "no modern, tempo-rich football", as he likes to see it. Leko was angry at Forbs for his reaction and dismissal and compared his team's play to U16 level.

Nevertheless, Gent created strong chances and goals, led by defender Christian Burgess and his partner Ngom. Attacker Araujo showed excellent striking technique and good crossing ability, while the 19-year-old striker Vergara demonstrated an impressive presence. These contrasts between result and performance were a theme of the matchday.

The focus for Anderlecht now shifts immediately to the home game against Kortrijk. Sitting in eleventh place with a large points deficit, any further slip-up could further undermine the season's objectives. The squad must become stronger and more consistent quickly, even without the sidelined Camara and Hey.

Meanwhile, arch-rivals Club Brugge are preparing for a historic match in Lommel on Friday and their first Champions League home game against Aston Villa. The pressure on Anderlecht to recapture attention is immense.
