Anderlecht begin their Europa League league phase campaign on Wednesday night at home against unbeaten Olympique Lyon. The match will be broadcast live on Sporza and represents a significant test for Vitor Bruno's side after an inconsistent start to their domestic season.
The Purple & White qualified for this new phase by eliminating Hammarby, PAOK Saloniki and Kairat Almaty over the summer. Facing Lyon, who are undefeated in Ligue 1 and sit fourth, is an immediate tough assignment. Anderlecht themselves are currently seventh in the Jupiler Pro League with ten points from six matches, following a 0-1 victory at KV Mechelen last Friday. The team has a standings position that leaves room for improvement.
Domestic Context
The win in Mechelen, with a goal from Tawfik Bentayeb in the forty-third minute, ended a run of two league matches without a victory. Prior to that, Anderlecht lost 3-0 to leaders Union and drew with Genk. Recent form is positive, however, with three wins, one draw and one loss in their last five matches across all competitions. The squad is dealing with the absence of Lucas Hey, who is sidelined long-term. Fans can check the full squad and current injuries status.
Looking Ahead
Following the European encounter with Lyon, Anderlecht face a home league match against Zulte Waregem, who are in fifth place, on Saturday. The schedule is becoming congested, but offers opportunities to climb the table. The focus for Vitor Bruno and his players is now entirely on preparing for their European debut in a packed Lotto Park. The match against Lyon kicks off at 21:00.
