Anderlecht secured an important but hard-fought victory against KV Mechelen. The 0-1 win on Saturday evening keeps the Brussels club in seventh place in the Jupiler Pro League, with ten points from six matches.
Coach Vitor Bruno was pleased with his players' effort. "We played a good first half and scored deservedly," goalkeeper Colin Coosemans said afterwards. The only goal came twenty minutes from time through Tawfik Bentayeb, assisted by Ilias Koutsoupias. The three points are what matters most for Anderlecht at this stage of the season.
Growing Pains
The team is still struggling to find consistency in attack. With only four goals scored this campaign, productivity is a concern. Coosemans acknowledged it is a matter of time. "It's not that everything will start turning on a dime," he explained. He pointed to the many new faces needing to integrate quickly and the limited training time due to a packed schedule.
The defence held firm and kept a clean sheet. That's the second shutout in the last five league games. Recent form shows progress, with three wins, a draw and one defeat in that sequence. The full standings show Anderlecht are five points behind leaders Gent.
Next Challenge
Focus now shifts to the next home fixture against Zulte Waregem, who sit fifth. A win there could push the club further up the table. The injury to Lucas Hey remains a consideration for the manager when selecting his squad.
Anderlecht know they are working on a long-term project. The mentality and team spirit in difficult moments, like against Mechelen, are seen as the foundation for further growth.
Anderlecht now turns its focus to Europe. The club plays its first match of the season on Thursday, July 23 in the second qualifying round of the UEFA Europa League against Hammarby IF in Stockholm. The return leg is a week later at the Lotto Park. Both legs will be broadcast live on Mauve TV. The team, sitting seventh with ten points, must handle three qualifying rounds to reach the group stage.
