KBVB overturns Anderlecht fan ban at Union after appeal

Anderlecht no longer faces a ban on away fans at Union. The KBVB Disciplinary Board overturned its earlier ruling on Thursday, which had imposed a one-year ban following last season’s cup final incidents. Anderlecht currently sits fourth in the Jupiler Pro League with zero points after the opening matchday of the new season.

What happened last season?

During last season’s cup final against city rivals Union, Anderlecht fans caused chaos with widespread pyro use. Over thirty incidents were recorded, including hundreds of flares set off, more than 250 seats damaged, and a gate destroyed. A brawl broke out among supporters, and smoke from the pyrotechnics delayed kickoff both before and after halftime. At full-time, at least fifteen flares were fired onto the pitch.

The Disciplinary Committee ruled that historic tensions between the clubs made it harder for Anderlecht to control its fans. It responded by banning Anderlecht fans from Union’s ground for a year. Anderlecht appealed, arguing that innocent supporters were being unfairly punished.

Why this matters for Anderlecht

The Disciplinary Board sided with Anderlecht. A blanket ban on away fans for matches against a single rival was deemed disproportionate. The ruling stressed that such measures hurt not just the club, but also the supporters who simply want to cheer their team safely. The club still faces a €10,000 fine, now finalized.

Chairman Wouter Vandenhaute welcomed the decision. He stressed that the club always aims for a safe and positive matchday atmosphere. The focus now shifts to tightening security protocols to prevent repeat incidents.

What’s next for Anderlecht?

Anderlecht can once again bring fans to Union’s ground, provided it meets all safety requirements. The next home game is scheduled for February 13, 2027 against KV Mechelen. The club plans extra oversight of supporter groups and closer coordination with police.

This ruling marks a key step forward for the club and its fanbase. It shows Anderlecht’s willingness to take responsibility while also highlighting the board’s recognition of supporter impact.

Anderlecht opened the season with a 0-0 draw at Sint-Truiden and currently sits fourth in the Jupiler Pro League with zero points.
