Anderlecht signed Heekeren in January for 500,000 euros from Schalke 04. There he was the second goalkeeper, in Brussels he had to adapt immediately to a club where the bar and expectations never stay low for long. His first months did not provide a clear picture. Heekeren played one strong game, but also had a less convincing performance. In a team that after New Year did not always find what they were looking for, his story remained for the time being unfinished. On social media, the goalkeeper himself looked back on that start. "Sometimes a journey goes differently than you had imagined. And often you find just then the most important experiences. My move to Anderlecht last winter was a special step for me. Becoming a member of a club with such a rich tradition and an extraordinary football culture is something I do not consider self-evident", he wrote. Heekeren emphasizes above all that he does not want to use his limited playing time as an excuse. His message is one of patience, training, and being ready when it's needed. That's exactly the language that fans like to hear from a player who still has something to prove. "Who knows me, knows that I always want to help the team on the field. Although my playing time in the beginning was limited, I made use of every second on the training to be ready. When the opportunity arose, I seized it", he said. The collective balance also remained unspoken by him. Anderlecht did not always meet its own expectations in the second half of the season, but managed to qualify for European football. For a club that yearns for more than just surviving in the top four, it feels both like a relief and a warning. "As a team, we did not always meet our own expectations in the second half of the season. That makes it all the more important that we ultimately achieved our goal: we qualified for European football", Heekeren said. The tone towards next season is clearly more ambitious. Heekeren does not speak of waiting, but of attacking. Not in big slogans, but with the determination of a player who knows that the summer can change a lot. "The first few months are behind us. Now begins the real work. I will go into the preparation with full motivation. I am convinced that we can write a very special story next season", he wrote. For Anderlecht, that preparation is more than just a physical restart. After a season with a lot of noise and too little conviction, the internal competition must also bring new energy. Heekeren has already expressed his intentions; now it must be seen on the field how much weight those words carry. Do you think Heekeren will deserve more minutes next season?
