Anderlecht officially denies interest in Thomas Meunier
Anderlecht announced on Monday that it has no formal interest in 82‑time international Thomas Meunier, despite rumors that the club is looking for a replacement for the injured Ilay Camara.
Why Meunier was on the radar
Meunier, whose contract with Lille expired, said in March he was open to a new challenge. He mentioned Club Brugge, Anderlecht and Standard as possible destinations. "There is a lot of work at the purple‑whites and they already have three or four right‑backs," he said, adding that any club could call him. Anderlecht reportedly made contact, but denied any official interest.
Antwerp makes a move for the right‑back
Antwerp recently approached Meunier. The club faces an unclear defensive situation and needs an experienced right‑back who can provide leadership after the departure of forwards like Vincent Janssen. Because Meunier is Belgian, lives in Brussels and is available on a free transfer, he fits their profile perfectly. "We need an extra right‑back," said Antwerp manager.
How this fits Anderlecht's current situation
Anderlecht currently sits fourth in the Jupiler Pro League with 33 points (15W‑10D‑15L) and a recent form of LWDDL. The team has scored 59 goals and conceded 62 this season, sitting 24 points behind leaders Club Brugge KV. Their last match ended in a 5‑1 defeat to Union St. Gilloise on 24 May 2026. With Camara injured and a lack of depth on the right flank, the transfer market is vital, but the club wants to avoid rash decisions.
What this means for the future
Meunier remains fully focused on the World Cup, having spoken recently with national coach Roberto Martínez. "He doesn't need to worry that my future will distract me," the international said. Without an agent, he retains control over his next move. For Anderlecht, this means they must continue their internal search for a replacement or explore other options while trying to close the gap on Brugge.
Current context
With the current standing of 4th place, 33 points and a recent 5‑1 loss, Anderlecht must act quickly to solve defensive issues and bring the title race, 24 points behind Club Brugge KV, back within reach.
